ON BOARD
AB 140
FORTY-TWO METRES OF PURE
COMFORT
The AB 140, measuring almost 42 metres overall,
is the largest semi-custom superyacht produced
by Italian shipyard AB Yachts. An open-style
model, she is intended for owners who crave the
dual notion of speed and luxury.

T
he first ever AB 140, launched in 2007, was a
creation of naval architect Marco Arnaboldi,
with exterior design by the AB Yachts in-house team
and interiors styled by Studio Vaf. Today we’re loo-
king at the latest model in the range, fully developed
(architecture, engineering and interiors) this time at
the shipyard, which gives a hint of the potential of
this firm based in Massa, a stone’s throw from the
famed yachting hub of Viareggio.
AB Yachts was founded in 1992 with a view to crea-
ting a benchmark product in the luxury superyacht
market. It was one of the first yards to apply waterjets
to small, high-performance yachts and also to use spe-
cially-manufactured glues, previously only ever seen
in the aviation industry, to join composite structures
and therefore prevent vibrations, creaking and thermal
expansion. All AB Yachts models are vacuum-infused
composite builds powered by waterjets, a system de-
livering good performance when compared to shaft
or surface drives and perfect for those seeking speed,
reliability, safety, low maintenance and peace-of-mind
when sailing through shallow waters.
In 2001, AB Yachts became part of the Fipa Group,
which already owned the Maiora, Cbi Navi and Inter-
mare brands. Fipa shipyards are capable of building
fibreglass boats up to 50 metres LOA, aluminium or
steel yachts up to 80 metres, and open-style perfor-
mance superyachts up to 60 metres in length.
IMPRESSIVE SEA VIEWS
Even though each model varies slightly in length
and owners can fully customise interior layouts, all
AB 140s are clearly defined by their extremely sleek
and sporty lines, in keeping with the agility and per-
formance bestowed by Rolls-Royce Kamewa or MJP
waterjet propulsion systems, which give top speeds
of up to 50 knots.
This unit sports a flybridge receding to aft that
creates an open-air daytime area, whilst a second such
space, accessed from the side decks, occupies the fo-
redeck and features a wraparound sofa, a large dining
table and a spacious sunpad.
To aft, rounding off the main deck, is another huge
sunpad above the garage, whilst the cockpit is the
ideal space for the owner and his guests to dine at an
eight-seater table or relax at the bar under the shade of
the superstructure overhang, which itself houses the
communications and radar antenna.
Leading down from here is the swim platform and
an enormous garage door, which conceals the engine
room and technical area.
Particularly eye-catching on this spectacular yacht
is the balcony that opens out on the hull from the
owner’s suite, creating a privileged viewpoint whilst
at anchor or even an alternative access to the water.
INTERIOR SOPHISTICATION
The design and layout of indoor spaces, particularly
those on the main deck, are far from conventional.
The interior is bright and airy thanks to large win-
dows and the prevalence of light tones in the décor
and furnishings, the use of aged wood on panelling
and furniture and the juxtaposition of white leather
upholstery and dark oak flooring.
The owner of an AB 140 can essentially plump for
one of two possible layouts and then let his own crea-
tivity take hold according to his aesthetic or decora-
tive criteria.
In the case of this particular model, the main deck
is split into three functional spaces. The well-propor-
tioned salon occupies the aft part of the deck and is
fully connected to the exterior through large curved
glass doors in keeping with the general design of the
vessel. It is a full-beam, open-plan space exclusively
for living and can be separated from the other areas
using a movable bulwark.
The wheelhouse, positioned midway along this deck
and boasting three seats, divides the main salon from
a second living-dining area located forward on a lower
level, with access from the portside corridor. The
other corridor opens onto the staircase leading down
to the lower deck. A second layout option, perhaps a
more classical choice, places the dining area between
the salon and the wheelhouse whilst retaining the se-
cond living area forward.
Five cabins are spread across the lower deck. Two
VIP suites are found forward: one with twin beds and
the other with a double bed plus Pullman berth. One
of the other guest cabins also includes a Pullman,
along with a gym, sauna room and private shower.
The full-beam owner’s stateroom boasts a sea
balcony, as well as a living area and his-and-her
bathrooms, in which the lacquered white furniture
contrasts with the carbon fibre used on the fixtures
and floors.
