nance and no splits, splinters or deformation over time. It
is also lighter than teak, proof of the weight factor which
Sunseeker also took into consideration when designing the
carbon-fibre hardtop, which slashes the total weight of the
flybridge area to just 750 kilos.
Totally bespoke concept
In its quest towards semi-custom construction, the yard
offers 28 MY clients a choice between no less than 230 diffe-
rent fabrics, colours, textures and finishes, as well as 28 types
of leather, 10 varnishes, 8 varieties of granite and marble,
and three types of wood (oak, walnut and cherry). The owner
can also specify how many coats of varnish to apply in order
to achieve the gloss effect he desires. Fortunately, there are
14 sample pieces already prepared to help the client decide.
In the bowels of the 28 MY we find the power that one
comes to expect from a Sunseeker. The option of twin
2000hp MTU 12V or twin 1925hp CAT C32 engines
allow for top speeds of 29 knots and a range of up to 400
miles, as well as particularly comfortable cruising speeds of
between 20 and 25 knots.
Everything points to the yard having hit the nail on the
head with this model, ensuring that demand is still at a
healthy pace, which says a lot in favour of this concept and
also the value given by its price tag: 4.63 million pounds.
Every five weeks, a new 28 MY rolls off the production line
and the shipyard is currently making inroads with the model
in markets such as Australia, Brazil, China or South Africa.

Lürssen
Azzam, the world’s largest
private yacht
H
er name is Azzam, she stretches to 180 metres and her
top speed is said to be 30 knots. Over six decks Azzam
offers an array of saloons, including an open-plan main
saloon measuring 29 metres with an 18-metre beam and
no pillars whatsoever to interrupt the flow.
Naval engineering records have been broken for this
type of yacht, in particular the engine layout: Azzam is
powered by a combination of two gas turbines and three
diesel engines producing a total output of 94,000hp.
The German shipyard, due to deliver the yacht to her
owner at the end of the year, worked on the project with
an international team led by Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi.
Technical engineering was performed in-house, whilst
exteriors were designed by Nauta Yachts and interiors are
the work of French designer Christophe Leoni.
Besides holding the title of the world’s largest private
yacht, the construction of Azzam was also Lürssen’s most
challenging project to date, not only in terms of enginee-
ring, but also the timeline, as the superyacht was built in
just three years, plus twelve months dedicated to design.
Azzam snatches the title from the 162.5-metre Eclip-
se, owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich and
built in 2010 by fellow German shipyard Blohm & Voss.
Despite all the secrecy surrounding the project, her price
is estimated at over 500 million euros and her owner is
rumoured to be a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family.
Her fuel tanks are said to hold up to a million litres and
features include a vast garage and a helipad.
Monokini
the third Baglietto 44m Fast
The third example in the Fast 44m series from the Italian
shipyard based in La Spezia has hit the water. Following
Tatiana per Sempre and Apache II, Monokini, with her
sleek silver hull and superstructure, is a step forward in
the natural evolution of this line created by Francesco
Paszkowski Design. Interiors are by Alberto Mancini,
whilst naval architecture and engineering are from the Ba-
glietto in-house team. Measuring 44 metres and with a
beam of 8.3 metres, the all-aluminium yacht accommoda-
tes ten guests in five cabins on the lower deck, with crew
quarters for eight. Thanks to her twin 3600hp MTU engi-
nes, she can reach a top speed of thirty knots.
The interior design draws inspiration from the rational
yet sophisticated world of aviation. Woods such as sycamore
and wenge, steel and leather combine harmoniously into a
skilful blend of cream, beige and grey shades that create a
stylish, refined atmosphere. All interior furniture is custom-
made, including sofas, tables, lamps and even door handles.
Launch of Benetti Superyacht Crystal
140
Luna
Christened Luna, the second unit of the Benetti Crystal
140 line is now in the water. The yacht was launched at
the group’s Lusben shipyard, situated adjacent to the Be-
netti headquarters in Viareggio. After the ceremony, she
made her way along the canal to the Darsena Italia, where
the owner and his guests celebrated a private party.
The Benetti Crystal 140 Luna measures 42 metres,
has a 9-metre beam, weighs 375 tons and is powered by
twin CAT C32 Acer engines delivering 1081kW, which
allows for a cruising speed of 15 knots. With a fuel re-
serve of 58,000 litres, Luna has an ocean-going range of
4,000 miles. Besides the owner’s stateroom, Luna offers
accommodation for up to eight guests in four suites, two
with double beds and two with twins.
