T
wenty-four metres is widely considered the mark
where a yacht becomes a superyacht, and with it a
whole load of safety regulations, construction require-
ments, international laws to be observed, crewing stipu-
lations and captain-related qualifications. What’s more,
the new regulations on yachting qualifications in Spain
set the limit of 24 metres as the maximum vessel length
that the titleholder of Yacht Captain, the highest quali-
fication, can command.
This is why for this article we’ve chosen five yachts
just under this cut-off point, all representative of what
the European market has to offer at the moment: a Spa-
nish-build, a ‘Made-in-Italy’ yacht, a French model and
two British boats. All feature a crew cabin, flybridge,
spacious midships owner’s suite and three or four cabins,
as well as cutting-edge design and modern layout with
single-level main-deck saloons, large side windows on
the superstructure and hull, and optimised volume and
headroom. They also pay particular attention, each in
their own way, to open-air spaces, either on the flybrid-
ge, cockpit or foredeck, an area that is increasingly gai-
ning importance as a private relaxation space shielded
from view when berthed stern-to. Though with diffe-
rent styles and engine performance, they are all ocean-
going yachts with varying ranges, whilst reflecting the
criteria and approaches to cruising and onboard life desi-
red by owners.
Azimut Magellano 76
The Magellano 76 is the latest and also largest model
in this range from the Italian yard Azimut. Her plumb
bow, pure lines, wraparound windows and raised fly-
bridge hardtop are all essential design features.
Particularly interesting is the Bill Dixon-designed
semi-displacement hull, called Dual Mode by the shi-
pyard, which allows the boat to cruise at either 9 or 22
knots without losing any of her qualities.
Add to this her excellent range – 550 miles at 15
knots and 1,500 miles at 9 knots – and it’s clear that
we’re talking about an ocean-going cruiser for extensive
sailing with complete peace of mind.
The layout allows for total separation between guest
and crew areas. The 76 boasts four double ensuite cabins
and three aft cabins for crew, who also have their own
living quarters and laundry.
Midships, the owner enjoys a large suite with oodles of
light thanks to large rectangular side windows. What’s
more, the port cabin has a door leading to the master
suite, so it can be converted into an extra relaxation area
or private office.
All in all, optimum range for long cruises, good per-
formance at low speeds and the chance to sail fast when
needed. These are the three mainstays of the brand new
Magellano.

Sunseeker 75 Yacht
Unveiled at this year’s London Boat Show, the Sunseeker
75 Yacht is the embodiment of the yard’s vast experience
in designing and building luxury yachts featuring cut-
ting-edge technology and materials. Premium quality
also abounds inside the 75, with meticulous attention to
detail thanks to the intricate design detail in the leather-
wrapped cabinetry.
On both the lower and main deck - which offers a
galley, sophisticated yet comfortable saloon, dining
area and helm station – the feeling of space is enhanced
thanks to the Z-shaped panoramic glazing and hull win-
dows, which provide amazing views of the open waters.
The 75 Yacht maximises the use of outdoor areas, both
on the flybridge and the foredeck, which is designed
as a second relaxation area with sofa, wet bar and vast
sunpad. What’s more, the cockpit also boasts a comfor-
table seating area shaded by the flybridge overhang.
This brand new model can accommodate up to eight
guests in three double cabins and one twin, each with
their own ensuite.
The spacious engine room can house a range of engine
options, from MAN to MTU or CAT Acert, which de-
liver up to 34 knots tops and 25 when cruising, with a
range of 325 miles.
