Magellano 76
Sail at your own pace
Ocean-going range, good low-speed performan-
ce and the freedom to semi-plane when required:
these are the three cornerstones of the new Ma-
gellano concept.

T
he Magellano 76 is the latest and also largest mo-
del in this four-strong range first revealed in 2009
by the Italian shipyard Azimut. The 76 reshapes and
revamps the 74-foot model, and in less than just one
metre manages to gain in volume, living space and prac-
ticality. This becomes particularly evident when looking
at the well-balanced layout and the separation of crew
and storage areas from owner and guest spaces. The ex-
terior styling, work of Ken Freivokh, is characterised by
a straight bow, rounded lines, the verticality and sheer
size of the windows hugging the superstructure, and the
harmonious integration of the flybridge into the boat’s
architecture. The hard top here, thrust high into the air,
is an essential part of the design from an aesthetic po-
int of view. However, formal values aside, this 24-metre
yacht, just like the entire range, stands out for the uni-
que design of its ‘Dual Mode’ semi-displacement hull
created by Bill Dixon, which presents rounded shapes
along the keel line, a vertical bow, sharp angles along
the waterline and a hull exit angle of just 8.2%, which
enhances stability and therefore boosts comfort when
underway. Meanwhile, the plumb bow is perfect for
low-speed cruising, at 10 or 11 knots, whilst the longi-
tudinal reinforcements provide support and let the hull
semi-plane at high speeds.
Here we have a boat designed to sail comfortably at
gentle cruising speeds of 12-15 knots or less and in any
condition, although it can reach a top speed of 22 knots
when required. Add to this a generous range of around
550 miles at 15 knots with approximate fuel consump-
tion of 200 l/h, or 1,500 miles at nine knots with fuel
consumption at 46 l/h, it is obvious that the Magellano
76 is a cruiser designed for long voyages with peace-of-
mind fully assured.
Interior
Styled by the yard’s in-house design studio, led by Ales-
sandro Pulina, the interior of the Magellano 76 answers
a simple requirement: to sail far and wide while offering
the best possible conditions and maximum comfort. Up
to now there have been two kinds of yachts meeting
these criteria: classic trawlers and the famous Italian na-
vettas. From the former, the 76 draws its performance
at low speed and its range, with functionality, style and
liveability being inspired by the latter. Yet this is not
a fusion, but a new concept, as this boat sails far faster
than the others when required, presents a truly Italian
style with regard to classic trawlers, and modernises yet
refines the concept of ocean-cruising yachts.
To see the extent to which the yard has made the most
of the extra two feet when it comes to liveability, you
only have to look at two aspects: the space gained on the
lower deck, which allows for complete separation bet-
ween guest and crew areas, and the cabin layout itself.
Crew can access the lower deck either from the bathing
platform or from the galley located on the main deck,
thus creating two independent routes which guarantee
maximum guest privacy at all times. What’s more, if the
owner wishes to close off the galley from sight, the shi-
pyard can install polarised transparent bulkheads, with
no detriment whatsoever to views of the sea, which are
one of the most outstanding features of the main deck
design. As for night-time areas on the lower deck, the
Magellano 76 devotes the forward half to four double
ensuite cabins for the owner and guests, with three crew
cabins, a laundry room and crew quarters to aft. The
owner enjoys a large suite amidships with a head and
walk-in wardrobe, drawing natural light from large rec-
tangular side windows which can be partly opened. The
starboard guest cabin has a door linking it to the master
suite, which means it can become a natural extension
of the owner’s space, with a foldaway bed that converts
into a desk when stored away, in other words, giving the
option of a truly private office for the owner.
Main deck
The revamped style that bestows personality to the Ma-
gellano 76 is also on show in the guest area on the main
deck. Warm, bright (thanks to the large side windows),
cosy and modern, the salon-dining area is furnished in a
modestly nautical style, a nod to classic trawlers, making
abundant use of leather and hides, as well as walnut-clad
bulkheads. There is a long eight-seater table opposite a
sofa served by coffee tables, whilst the forward section of
this area is taken up by the open galley and wheelhouse
with two pilot armchairs, separated from the living area
by a low unit concealing a pop-up TV.
Without a doubt, the most notable feature is the fe-
eling of at-oneness with the ocean. The masterful design
ensures a total lack of visual barriers, not even those so-
metimes found in other yachts where forward views are
often hindered by the height of the wheelhouse.
Outdoor living
The Magellano 76, compared to the 74, offers almost
one metre more of flybridge, split into three functio-
